The United Nations in Ghana, led by the UNAIDS Secretariat with the co-sponsorship of UNICEF and WHO and with funding support from the French Embassy and in collaboration with private sector (Cinema 57) and a grassroots youth-led NGO (Reformation Community) with a passion for supporting children, will jointly commemorate World AIDS Day 2024 and 16 days of Activism against gender-based violence with “The Reel Change initiative”, an open-air silent cinema fundraising event which will be preceded by a bus tour for mothers/survivors of GBV living with HIV dubbed the “Yeekyin Chapter”.
On December 1, 2024, World AIDS Day, the Commonwealth Hall Amphitheatre at the University of Ghana will host the Reel Change Initiative, and with an anticipated attendance of 500 people, the event aims to raise a minimum of $10,000 (approximately GHS 150,000) to support orphans and other children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.
The event will feature the documentary Orphans of Nkandla which poignantly captures the struggles of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
There will also be a showing of Dallas Buyers Club, which tells the story of Ron Woodroof, a rough-living electrician and rodeo cowboy from Texas who is diagnosed with HIV and given 30 days to live.
